Amelia swam up to her new home and couldn’t stop smiling. “Finally, made it” she thought to her self as she relaxed in the water. It had taken her three weeks to swim here. Though it would have been shorter if she hadn’t stopped so many places. She was glad to see all of her belongings made it to the island. She only had a tent, shower, cooler, and picnic table. Not much but it was a start.
Amelia floated on her back as she thought about the life she led before coming to Sulani. She was a Conservationist and had traveled the world helping restore natural habitats back to their former glory. It was am amazing career but she had been doing it since she was a teenager. She would be turning 25 this year and had decided to finally settle down and start a family of her own.
Nalani one of her best friends growing up reached out to her and requested her help with restoring Sulani back to its former glory. She agreed to the job with the stipulation that once completed they were to keep her employed at the conservation center. So with what little money she had she purchased a plot of land and headed to her new home.
Amelia was brought back to reality by floating into the shore. She quickly sprang up and changed into her human form. She looked around and thankfully no one saw. Its not against merlaw to show yourself to humans but Amelia did that once and the reaction was not a friendly one. Amelia squealed in delight as she noticed a fire pit. She excitingly lit it.
Amelia closed her eyes and smiled as she twirled the flames around her. Fire Dancing was a past time Amelia picked up from a local in Selvadorada. It was something she did often to relax and unwind from a hard day.
“Hey you going to light yourself on fire if you don’t open your eyes!!!” a voice shouted. Amelia didn’t even need to open her eyes to know who was yelling at her it was her best friend Nalani. Amelia put the sticks out and walked over to her friend.
“Long time no see, Tell me everything you have been up to.” Amelia said as she pulled Nalani in for a hug.
“I haven’t done much once school was over. My plan was to swim the oceans seeing all I could see but this was my first stop and I haven’t left since. You should of seen this place back then it was beautiful. Now Sulani is slowing dying and our conservation center is trying but so far no luck” Nalani stopped long enough to catch a breath. Amelia thought it was time cut in because once Nalani started talking it was hard to get a word in edge wise.
” Wow, I never expected you to stay in one place for so long. We both were adventurers when we were younger. Our mom’s would have had our fins bolted to the ocean floor if they could have. ” Amelia and Nalani burst out laughing. “I know right we are 100% the reason they have grey hair.” Nalani said as she wiped tears of laughter from her eyes.
“I could go for a swim. Just let me change into my swimsuit and we can dive in like old times” Amelia said disappearing in to the tent for a moment.
Amelia and Nalani spent the rest of the day in the ocean swimming around and having a blast catching up. When nightfall hit they raced each other back to shore. Nalani beat Amelia by a mile. She was always the faster swimmer.
Amelia spent the evening building a sand castle. Close to midnight Nalani said her goodbyes so Amelia could get some sleep before beginning her new job.
